Description:
Fairtrade Fortnight – 22nd Feb to 7th March 2010

This year we are being encouraged to swap our normal purchases for fairly traded alternatives. We all know about tea, coffee and sugar. Some of us may be aware of chocolate (including Cadbury’s dairy milk!), bananas and some other fruits but … did you know that you can get toiletries such as body butter and cotton wool balls? You can give that special treat with beers, ales and wines or say it with fairly traded flowers! You can get socks, pants and T-shirts that are fairly traded as well as olive oil and rice. Now there are so many more options available.
The slight increase in price hides a wealth of benefits for the producers such as a fair price for their labour and a say in how they work. The workers are also entitled to a safe working environment without being exposed to harmful chemicals. A small premium is paid to benefit the whole community and is improving the local infrastructure so that schools, roads and medial facilities as more readily available. The whole community have a say in what their priorities are.
So during this fortnight we are asked to consider changing one item in our shopping baskets … or may be more and if we can’t find what we want we are asked to ask the store manager to stock it by completing the card at the back of the Little Book of Swap.
